Development of an Innovative Assistive System for People with Visual Impairments
Existing assistive systems for people with visual impairments primarily focus on simple obstacle detection, thereby limiting users’ independence in everyday life and their social interaction. The project aimed to overcome this limitation through the use of computer vision, providing semantic recognition of objects, professional roles, and specific individual identities.
Thanks to advances in algorithms and the increasing availability of digital data, such processes can now be performed efficiently on mobile devices. The proposed system integrates an array of sensors (camera and earpiece) into the user’s glasses, connects to a mobile device, and conveys the relevant information through audio feedback. At the same time, an adaptable interface controls the frequency of data sampling and audio transmission, ensuring that the technology works harmoniously alongside the user’s natural perceptual processes.
The project was funded by the Operational Programme “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation” (EPAnEK), under the NSRF 2014–2020.
